Trucking's Impact on the Environment and Becoming more Eco-Friendly
Today, June 5th, 2019 is World Environmental Day.
Transportation has a significant impact on the environment. It is a major user of energy and burns the most petroleum world wide. This means transportation is a main contributor to global warming through emissions of carbon dioxide. In the United States alone, nearly 30% of greenhouse gas emissions come from transportation.
Most developed countries now have regulations that reduce the individual vehicles emissions, however, this has been offset by an increase in the number and use of each vehicle.
Here is a pie chart to show the greenhouse gas emissions used in the transportation industry world wide.
A Greenhouse Gas is a gas that absorbs and emits radiant energy. The primary greenhouse gases in the Earth’s atmosphere are water vapor, carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide and ozone.
As a truck driver or someone in the industry, how do you minimize your impact to our environment?
Here are some tips that you can be mindful of while on the road to contribute to a healthier environment for all of us!
1. Idling Time
Turning your truck off is as easy as turning off your lights back at home. By turning off your truck you stop wasting diesel and emitting greenhouse gases. Try and use the auxiliary units provided at most truck stops that let you use your truck instead of idling.
2. Route Planning
Planning ahead to ensure you take the most efficient routes will help you avoid bad weather, traffic jams, and added driving time.
3. Speed Reduction / Acceleration
By maintaining a constant speed you will minimize your greenhouse gas emissions. Look ahead for brake lights and take note of traffic flow.
Installing aerodynamic panels on trailers and replacing older engines with environmentally-friendly engines will save you financially as well as environmentally in the long run!
5. Maintenance and Upkeep
Proper tire pressure, fluid levels, oil changes, and filters all factor in improving fuel efficiency. Great to note in your regular everyday vehicles as well.
6. Dispatch organization
When load planning, merging loads destined for the same end point will maximize your trucking efficiency.
